Who Needs Paula or Colonel Sanders?

We did it.  We attempted home-made fried chicken and made it perfectly.  Alex had it in his mind that he wanted to make it after reading a Bon Appetit article about it.  We got the supplies from three different grocery stores.  The cast iron skillet was the hardest to locate, but finally did.  We had the cooling rack and the tongs.  The buttermilk, flour and spices.  We were ready.  He followed the recipe to a tee (see link above for the one we used) and it turned out amazing.  The chicken was cooked wonderfully (thanks to our meat and candy thermometer we bought).  The outside was golden, crispy and so good.  I was very impressed with his frying techniques.  And considering we have to buy the biggest thing of peanut oil ever, I’m sure we will try some other fried goodies soon.  But for now, check out the photos below of our first fried chicken.

Holidays: Northwest Style

So, this year Alex and I are staying over here on the Left Coast for the holidays.  We are looking forward to a couple of mini vacations which should be a lot of fun.  Of course, I’ll miss going back home to see my parents, but they plan on coming to visit up in the springtime which will be better (I don’t know if I would want to brave the Midwest snow they are having!)

For Christmas, we will be taking a couple of days to drive to Portland again to see my friend Victoria.  She’s not traveling back to the Bay Area this time around, so we thought it would be a good time to go see her.  Plus, who doesn’t want to go visit Portland again?!

We always like to do something for New Year’s too.  One year we stayed at a Wisconsin B & B and did some skiing.  A couple of times we’ve gone out to see live music.  This year, we’re driving up to Vancouver, BC for a couple of days!  We’re staying at the Pan Pacific, which is right on the water.  We have tickets to a fun NYE party for the 31st and then hope to explore and eat lots of Chinese food.

We are looking forward to our mini, holiday vacations and seeing some new parts of the Northwest!  Be on the lookout for pictures soon after.
